“A Cool Place for Shady People”
Established in 1898, the Parkview Nite Club is a Cleveland landmark for good food, good beer, and good music even through the prohibition! This institution has been featured many times on TV; most notably Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. It’s nestled on the west end of Cleveland off of Detroit Ave on W 58th. I was honestly a little intimidated walking up to it. First of all, I just finished moving into a new apartment from Kentucky and was in yoga pants and a ratty t-shirt and this place was a ‘nite club’. Secondly, the building is really old and looks like a ‘locals only’ kind of place. But I had to adhere to one of my traveling rules that states you can’t judge a restaurant by its building (most of the time).
We typically go to the Parkview for their amazing happy hour deals and that time of day is usually busier than during the afternoons; but there is always a table open! I will warn you that on Wednesdays and Saturdays they have a blues jam and live bands (respectively) playing and space goes quickly!
I had many reservations about going there that first time; but, I kept telling myself that if they featured this place on a national TV show, it can’t be all that bad (unless it’s Kitchen Nightmares, of course). It’s definitely a Cleveland bar and has its history as well as the Parkview’s history plastered on the walls in the form of newspaper clippings, pictures, handmade signs, and of course the Leg Lamp. It’s seat yourself, so we found a comfy table by the bowling machine and in perfect view of the flat screen TV’s.
About a minute later we were greeted by one of their sassy servers. The men and women that work at the Parkview are all very knowledgeable and seem to have been working there for a while. Now, the people that work there are awesome. They can heckle you but it’s all in good fun. My fiancé and I have a blast bantering back and forth with the employees. We’ve never had a problem with anyone there! The waitresses and waiters are attentive, occasionally forgetful of extra napkins when it gets busy, but informative and genuinely good people. You’ll never feel rushed here and it’s a great place to wind down at the end of the workday.
I ordered the evenings special of five $0.50 sliders and a basket of chili fries and my fiancé ordered the other special of wings for $3.50! That’s right… Not one, but TWO food specials on Monday nights! Rock on!
The food takes a while to cook up – they work with a small-ish kitchen and a high demand – so that slows down service sometimes. When the food comes out though, you forget all about the wait. It comes out hot and smelling delicious. They don’t skimp on the portions here but they don’t give you an outrageous amount of food (like, ehem, Olive Garden does). The portions are just enough to eat in one sitting and still have room for one or two of their ever changing craft brew list and you don’t leave feeling like death or in a deep food coma.
They offer a wide variety of burgers and sandwiches and many unique appetizers. One thing that I really enjoy about the Parkview is their infamous monthly special menu. This special menu offers something unique and not on the permanent menu and daily specials menu such as Lamb burgers, ribs, and jambalaya. Entrees typically run between $7-10 and beer specials vary… some nights for happy hour it’s $2 off select craft beers. With all of the deals on food and beer, it’s easy to come here and eat like a king!
